The County Westmeath village of Clondelever is situated near to Mullingar and once held its own races in the mid-1700s. The races took place in the glorious open countryside surrounding the village and were deemed sufficiently important to be included in the ‘Historical List of Horse Matches and Races of 1764’. The 3 day meeting opened on Monday 24th September with a 5 year old Purse which was won by Mr Tennison’s Juliet, beating Mullingar Lass and Lass of the Mill. The next day a Hunters’ Plate saw Mr Simms’s Spittle-Fields overcome Mr Nugent’s Sportsman. The main event on the concluding day was for 6 year olds and upwards and went to Mr Heaney’s Creeping Kate. There are no records of further racing in the village. |
